Lane Tech Results: Decatur, St Joseph, Bateman Win

Three different schools claimed section championships at the inaugural 2014-2015 season event hosted at Lane Tech November 15.

In the Advanced Section, Decatur claimed clear first place with 13.0 lead by Aria Hoesley and Joey Buklis. Aria claimed the individual championship with a perfect 5.0 while Joey took clear second at 4.5, drawing Taft's Matthew Wong in the fourth round.

Anh Lee (Goudy), Christian Turk (Aurora Chess Club), and Emil Weisfeld (Burley) tied for third with tiebreaks necessary to decide trophy order.

Matthew had the top tiebreak among the seven 3.5 scorers to claim sixth place honors.

Goudy took second in team honors with Bateman taking third place.

48 competed in the section, representing 22 teams.

In the Novice 5-8, St. Joseph of Summit needed tiebreaks to edge Goudy with both teams scoring 16.5 (top 4 used). Gallistel and St. Ethelreda tied for third place with Gallistel having the better tiebreak.

Amani Mugadill (St. Ethelreda) took the section championship on a blitz playoff after both he and Adam Kus (St. Joseph of Summit) finished with perfect 5.0's.

Huzayfa Sattar (Goudy) and Julian Tenorio (Gallistel) both finished with 4.5's tying for third place, with Huzayfa enjoying the better tiebreak.

There was a 14-way tie for fifth place with 4.0 scorers including Dylan Davis and Michael Meister of the Champion St. Joseph squad. Justin Davis finished a half point back with 3.5.

118 competed in the Novice 5-8 representing 23 teams.

In Novice K-4 competition, 176 players represented 31 teams. When the dust settled, Bateman finished a half point better than Decatur 17.0-16.5. Goudy was third with 16.0 while Skinner North was a half point further back at 15.5 to take fourth.

Five players finished with perfect 5.0 scores including Decatur's Avi Kaplan, Coonley's Kiran Sagbohan, Bateman's Zubair Ahmed, Aurora Chess Club's Reese Clark and Goudy's Masud Rahman.

Farnsworth's Jake Ryan posted the lone 4.5 score to take sixth place honors. 21 entrants posted 4.0/5 scores.

Tournament Organizer and Chief TD Mike Cardinale thanked Brian Hofman, Debi Prince and Cindy Frapolly "for all their hard work in hosting the event" and also thanked those who volunteered their time to assist during the tournament.
